How to Run Safely with a Jogging Stroller

Juggling parenthood and fitness can be a challenge, but running with a jogging stroller offers a fantastic way to stay active while spending quality time with your little ones. You both get fresh air, bonding time, and a healthy lifestyle.

Running with a stroller requires extra safety precautions, though. In a previous post, we went over an extensive list of safety checks to perform before you run to keep your little one safe. But what about your safety?

When using a jogging stroller, putting your health and wellness first is important, too. You’ll need to maintain correct form while running and be ready to run with the extra resistance of a stroller. Here are some tips to help you have a smooth and safe run!

Before You Run:

  1. Choose the right stroller: Invest in a high-quality jogging stroller designed for running. These strollers have features like a fixed front wheel, suspension, and tougher wheels. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, check out our post all about how to choose a quality jogger stroller!
  2. Make Sure You’re Ready: A jogging stroller adds extra resistance to your runs. It’s great for strength training, but it can be a difficult adjustment! Get some exercise in before you start with the jogging stroller. If you’ve just given birth, make sure you get the clear from your healthcare provider before starting tough workouts.
  3. Dress for the Weather: Both you and your little one should be dressed comfortably and appropriately to protect from the elements. Bundle up if it’s cold, and shed some layers if it’s hot!
  4. Plan Your Route: Stick to familiar, well-maintained paths with smooth surfaces. Avoid busy streets or uneven terrain. If it’s super cold out, avoid shady areas and ice.
  5. Stay Flexible: When you’re running with little ones, you’ll have to stay flexible to meet their needs. If they get fussy or overstimulated, then you may have to cut your run short. Set flexible goals for yourself, and don’t get too upset if you don’t quite hit your fitness goal.
  6. Pack Water: Make sure you have plenty of water and any other essentials you may need.
  7. Warm-Up and Cool-Down: Before any exercise, you should do your warm-up and cool-down stretches, walks, or any routine you prefer. Pushing a jogging stroller adds extra strain, so it’s important to take care of your body.

While Running:

  1. Maintain Good Form: This is especially important when running with a stroller. Stand tall with your shoulders back and your core engaged. Avoid slouching because it can strain your back and neck.
  2. Shorten Your Stride: Pushing a stroller requires shorter strides than your usual running form. Focus on a smooth, controlled push instead of long, powerful strides.
  3. Use One Hand (With Caution): It’s tempting to use both hands to push, but this can cause overuse injuries and strain. Alternate between hands, always making sure to use the wrist strap. This will help you maintain better balance, too.
  4. Always Use the Wrist Strap: Securely attach the wrist strap to your wrist and the stroller to prevent it from rolling away if you use your grip.
  5. Be Aware of Your Speed: Maintain a steady, in-control speed, especially if you’re running down an incline. Most strollers come with a hand brake to help you control speed.
  6. Be Extra Cautious: Be aware of your surroundings, maintain a steady pace, and pay close attention to pedestrians, cyclists, and uneven surfaces.
