Cold Weather Jogging Stroller Tips | Hazel & Fawn

Autumn and winter have arrived, but that doesn’t mean you and your little one need to stay cooped up inside. If you want to enjoy the crisp, cool air and gorgeous fall leaves, then a jogging stroller can be a great tool. You’ll stay fit and your little one will love the beautiful new weather.

Let’s be honest, though–it takes a little extra planning to keep everyone cozy on cold days. You have to think about appropriate clothing, accessories, and essentials. You’ll be concerned about inclement or unexpected weather and will need to plan your route more carefully.

Don’t worry, we’re here to help! We’ll go over everything you need to consider when getting ready for a cold-weather jog.

IMPORTANT: Our littlest kiddos are extra sensitive to extreme temperatures. Consult your pediatrician before running with your child in the cold. Avoid extreme cold, snow, and ice for your child’s safety.

Dress for Success

  1. Layer Up: Both you and your little one benefit from layers. For the coldest days, start with a base layer that wicks moisture, then add fleece or wool mid-layers and a windproof outer layer. Don’t forget hats, mittens, and warm socks! Remember, you generate heat while you run, but your little one needs extra help staying warm.
  2. Keep Little Toes Warm: Invest in good boots or booties and socks for your little one. You can also consider hand warmers tucked inside their shoes or mittens.

  3. Weather Shields: These awesome stroller accessories block wind and rain and trap heat, creating a mini winter wonderland for your child.
  4. Footmuffs: Some brands, like Thule, offer an insulated footmuff or blanket accessory! These items are great for keeping your little one warm and snug on your coldest runs.

Plan Your Route

  1. Seek Sunshine: Opt for paths with plenty of sun to warm things up. Plan your runs around peak sunshine hours. Don’t go out too early or too late.
  2. Choose Smooth Surfaces: Avoid icy patches and stick to plowed paths or sidewalks for safer, easier maneuvering. You’ll also want to avoid inclines or hills in case of unexpected ice.
  3. Stay Close to Home: You’ll want to get home quickly in case the weather turns nasty or your little one gets chilly.

Stay Fueled and Flexible:

  1. Insulated Bottles: For cold weather, pack your little one a warm drink! For our littlest kiddos, consider warmed-up milk. Older kiddos can enjoy hot cocoa, apple cider, or another seasonal favorite. It’ll make the trip extra special for them.
  2. Bring Extra Layers: You never know when a hat or mitten will fly off, or when layers need adjusting! Consider packing back-ups and an extra outer layer just in case.
  3. Have a Flexible Schedule: Just like on any jog, be ready to go home if your child needs to. Listen to their cues–if they’re cold or unhappy, cut the run short for their safety and comfort.

Bonus Tip: Keep your kiddo entertained! Teach them about seasonal changes, point out interesting things, and tell stories. A happy, engaged little one makes the run more enjoyable for everyone.
